Games Still Coming In 2022 To Be Excited For

These ones haven't been delayed... yet!

We’re nearly halfway into 2022 now, and while the earlier part of the year was fairly stacked with notable game releases there’s definitely a sense of uncertainty in the industry about how the rest of the year will pan out in comparison. Between an avalanche of delays and a huge amount of titles still waiting for release dates and reveals it can seem as though there’s not much to look forward to for the rest of 2022.

That’s why we’ve thrown together a list of games that we know (or are fairly confident) are still being released this year and are worth looking forward to. It’s far from a complete list but hopefully there’s something to keep everyone excited about the year ahead!

SNIPER ELITE 5

Sniper Elite 5 is right around the corner and it’s poised to be a pretty good choice for shooter/stealth fans who want an authentic and engaging solo or co-op experience with an exciting narrative. There’s a reason they keep making these and if you’ve never dived into the series before you’d do well to check this one out.

THE QUARRY

Supermassive Games has been working hard ever since they struck a cord with horror and narrative game fans with the excellent Until Dawn, carving themselves out a genre niche with the Dark Pictures series and now The Quarry, the studio’s next big AAA choose-your-own-death hit. With a fantastic cast that includes the likes of David Arquette, Ariel Winter and Justice Smith and some bonkers-looking visuals and motion capture it’s certainly got the chops, too.

Platforms: PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Switch, PC

The cheapest copy: $80.90 at Amazon with free shipping.

MARIO STRIKERS: BATTLE LEAGUE FOOTBALL

The only thing better than Nintendo characters playing football is Nintendo characters beating the ever-loving stuffing out of each other while playing football. Battle League Football looks to take the penchant that Mario Strikers already has for over-the-top action on the field and cranking it up even further by encouraging you to literally slam your own teammates in the back to boost them over to the opponent’s goal… or into the opponents themselves.

XENOBLADE CHRONICLES 3

Still fairly fresh from being announced, Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is coming sooner than anyone could have anticipated. It looks fantastic as well, taking the best bits of the first two games and Xenoblade Chronicles X to offer a massive, sweeping world with technical and addictive combat and compelling characters.

TWO POINT CAMPUS

Two Point Hospital was a welcome injection of old-school management sim sensibilities with a healthy dose of silliness, and Two Point Campus is set to do the same in the context of higher education. Design and run your own educational campuses that’ll offer anything from gastronomy to wizardry, and take care of your students during some of the best and most stressful years of their lives.

We recently got our hands on Two Point Campus and came away impressed.

Platforms: PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Switch, PC

The cheapest copy: $59 at Amazon with free shipping.

SAINTS ROW

A total franchise reboot in a series that had maxed out its ‘wackiness’ factor two games ago, Saints Row looks like just the shake-up the series needed. With its most diverse locale yet, a new band of entertaining main characters and more options for customisation and carnage than ever this should be the perfect thing for those of us missing the fun factor of the open-world crime sims of yore.

We recently saw a bunch of Saints Row in a hands-off demo and spoke to the team at Volition, which you can read about here.

When’s It Out? August 23rd

Platforms: PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PC

The cheapest copy: $78 (Day One Edition), $139 (Notorious Edition) at Amazon with free shipping.

THE LORD OF THE RINGS: GOLLUM

This was one of the first next-gen games announced and it’s finally happening. It follows the original trilogy and it’s a stealth game where you take control of none other than Gollum. It’ll be interesting to see how this one turns out and we won’t have to wait too much longer for it.

Platforms: PS5/PS4/Xbox Series X|S/Xbox One/PC

SPLATOON 3

Splatoon has been something of a runaway success for Nintendo, with Splatoon 2 selling over 12 million copies to date on the Nintendo Switch. The newest entry is due out in September and features the same combination of single-player adventure and addictive multiplayer modes alongside tons of player customisation and social features. Splatoon 3 is beefing up the selection of weapons and abilities as well as bringing back the 4v4 Turf War mode, and it promises a much more significant single-player story than the previous entries.

FORSPOKEN

Luminous Productions, the team behind the Luminous Engine that powers Final Fantasy XV, is back with an acrobatic action-adventure in the form of Forspoken. The game will follow a young New Yorker named Frey who finds herself transported to the mysterious and magical world of Athia and forced to contend with all manner of creatures and danger in a bid to find her way home. You can check out our behind-closed-doors preview of the game right here.

GOTHAM KNIGHTS

WB Games Montreal is tackling the open world Gotham template established by Rocksteady with a multi-character action adventure where a second player can drop in at anytime for co-operative play. Playing as Nightwing, Batgirl, Robin and Red Hood players will face off against the secretive Court of Owls and restore justice to Gotham City.

CALL OF DUTY: MODERN WARFARE II

The next game in the Modern Warfare franchise, it’s now been confirmed that the sequel to 2019’s Modern Warfare is Modern Warfare II and will release later this year. We don’t know a whole lot about the game, but once Activision announce a COD release date, it’s very rare to see it slip.

POKEMON SCARLET AND VIOLET

It’s hard to believe there’s already a new duo of mainline Pokemon games upon us this year, but at some point in late 2022 we’re getting Pokemon Scarlet and Pokemon Violet. For the first time, players will be able to explore a seamless open world with no borders between urban areas and wilderness. Also, Quaxly is the best starter by far.

MARIO + RABBIDS SPARKS OF HOPE

Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle took the world by surprise when it combined Nintendo’s iconic characters with those annoying Rabbids from the Rayman universe in an Ubisoft-developed turn-based strategy game. It shouldn’t have worked, but the end product was legitimately great, and so the promise of a sequel is very enticing. Sparks of Hope looks to expand the original’s grid-based combat into something more freeform, with less linear level design and enemy encounters that happen outside of the standard combat scenarios.

BAYONETTA 3

After four long years we can finally expect to see Bayonetta 3 in 2022 and our first, extensive look at gameplay has us more excited than ever to be back in control of our favourite bad-ass witch. While there’s still much we don’t know about the third game in the beloved action series, Bayo’s repertoire of abilities looks to be hugely expanded and even seems include giving players control of one of the demons that she’s able to summon in-game. Colour us incredibly keen.

STRAY

I feel like not much needs to be said about Stray. It’s a dystopian sci-fi mystery adventure where you play as a stray cat along with its robot drone companion – what else could you want? Despite its small development team, Stray looks absolutely gorgeous and it’s sure to shine on PS5. It is, thankfully, also coming to PS4 and PC as well when it launches at some stage this year.

MULTIVERSUS

It’s wild to think that a free-to-play take on Super Smash Bros packed with classic Warner Bros. characters is turning out to be more than just a lazy grab for microtransaction dollars – from what we’ve played of it, it’s actually pretty decent! With plenty of attention to authentic detail, solid mechanics and a heap of progression systems to keep you hooked this could be the real deal for anyone wanting a proper platform brawler outside of the Switch.

SONIC FRONTIERS

An open-world Sonic the Hedgehog game? Sign us up! The blue blur is enjoying a quiet renaissance lately thanks to the surprisingly good live-action film and some decent video game releases, but Frontiers is set to either be a proper comeback moment for Sonic and friends or a failed experiment in 3D Sonic gameplay. Time will tell.

A PLAGUE TALE: REQUIEM

A Plague Tale: Innocence struck a surprise chord with many of us when it released in 2019 with fantastic storytelling and characters, and a simple but well put-together adventure. The sequel will hopefully flesh out its stealth mechanics while adding tens of thousands more rats on-screen thanks to the power on next-gen gaming. Next-gen rats!

HOGWARTS LEGACY

Recent reveals have impressed Harry Potter fans, but not done much to change the minds of those that are choosing not to support the franchise as a whole. Whichever boat you’re in, it’s hard not to be impressed by what the team at Portkey looks to be achieving with this and the love and attention to detail they’ve poured into it. Hopefully the game does well enough that the studio is handed the keys to an IP that everyone can enjoy next time around.

GOD OF WAR RAGNAROK

Alright, yes, we don’t know for sure that God of War Ragnarok will release this year but we’d like to think that chances are pretty high for a Holiday 2022 launch. The sequel to the beloved 2018 franchise revival has a lot of work to do if it’s going to expand and improve upon what was arguably one of the last generation’s best games, so it’ll be interesting to see what surprises Santa Monica Studio has up its sleeve and how it takes advantage of the power of the PS5 given the sequel spans both console generations.

The latest update on God of War Ragnarok gave us a look at the game’s accessibility features.

SENUA’S SAGA: HELLBLADE II

The sequel to Ninja Theory’s excellent 2017 action-adventure, Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, is probably one of the most exciting titles in Xbox Game Studios’ upcoming portfolio. Everything we’ve seen of it so far looks positively stunning from a technological perspective, and we’re keen to see where Senua’s story goes after the events of the first game. Gameplay and release details are still sparse at this stage, but we’re anticipating this one hitting sometime around the end of this year.

FINAL FANTASY XVI

Much like God of War Ragnarok, the Jury is definitely still out on whether this one actually releases in 2022. We can hold out hope though if the game’s producer’s most recent comments are any indication – things are delayed but it sounds as if the game could still be deeper into development than we expect. With Yoshi-P, the man famed for saving Final Fantasy XIV, at the helm this could turn out to be just the new direction that the mainline series needs.
